Dead Men Do Tell Tales: Captain Jim Stinchcomb's Story

Jim Stinchcomb was from Lancaster, Ohio, where he was an attorney and a fierce war democrat. He seemed to be fighting two wars in 1863, one on the battlefield and the other in the court of public opinion as he lashed out, from afar, at his own party as the 1863 mid-term elections approached. Through it all, he kept up a steady correspondence back to Ohio and gave some graphic descriptions of what the men in the field were going through daily.

"They Suffer So Acutely:" Hospitals of Chattanooga During the Civil War

As battles began to rage in Tennessee in late 1862 and early 1863, Chattanooga’s location as a rail junction, away from the front, proved vital in housing for treating the wounded. Chattanooga soon became a hotbed for hospitals. Some of which were former hotels and warehouses to others that were mere homes of residents. Come join a park ranger for this special look at some of the sites associated with treating the soldiers, both North and South, in their dire and some cases final moments.

West Chickamauga Creek Kayak Tour

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will conduct a FREE, 4-hour, ranger-led kayak tour on Saturday, June 15, at 9 am. National Park Partners will sponsor this event, with the help of Outdoor Chattanooga, where participants will paddle the waters of West Chickamauga Creek from Dalton’s Ford to Reed’s Bridge to learn about the Confederate creek crossings during the Battle of Chickamauga.
